Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to develop her creativity and was attracted by the arts. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as a nurse so she could follow her passion for theater and art throughout the day. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was born alongside her extended family at Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to direct a movie that focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She started as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the rubbish of one members of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism duties, and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a PR professional in small production studios right after college. After this, she founded her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition, she started various lifestyle networks and promotions including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
