Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artistic expression and creative thinking. She worked as a night nurse so that she could give her aunt the time she required in the days to be able to enjoy writing, theatre and literature. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an effective tool for social change. DuVernay was raised by parents who were well-informed and taught her how to use the arts to find a way of expression. DuVernay who was born with her family in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the historic Civil Rights protest over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma led her later on to produce a film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. As an undergraduate student DuVernay became interested in producing in broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as examine their junk. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism by the tasks she was assigned, she was inspired to start a new career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant at a tiny film studio just after she had graduated from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
